Acupuncture Treatment and ANCA Small-Vessel Vasculitis

Maryland Holistics provides natural care which can slow the course of certain auto-immune and inflammatory diseases. ANCA vasculitis is an auto-immune condition which causes inflammation of the circulatory system (the system which moves blood throughout the body). The abbreviation ANCA refers to a group of antibodies associated with autoimmune diseases, called anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies. In ANCA vasculitis, these antibodies affect the functioning of immune cells called neutrophils and monocytes.

The symptoms of ANCA vasculitis occur when the immune cells cause destructive changes to the small arteries and veins within the tissues and organs. The symptoms can include red spots on the skin, numbness, tingling, or weakness, blood in the urine, redness and itching of the eyes, bleeding in the lungs or nose, and kidney problems including kidney failure.

By itself, the presence of ANCA within blood on a lab test is not sufficient to make a diagnosis of ANCA vasculitis. A patient's clinical picture is evaluated as a whole before making the diagnosis of ANCA vasculitis. Other inflammatory conditions are associated with this group of auto-antibodies, such as:

• Sclerosing Cholangitis (a liver condition)
• Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (formerly Wegener's Granulomatosis)
• Microscopic Polyangiitis
• Inflammatory Bowel Disease
• Certain types of kidney disease (glomerulonephritis)
• Churg-Strauss Syndrome
• Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE)
• Sjogren's Syndrome

How We Can Help

Maryland Holistics offers high quality care in the field of acupuncture and natural medicine. We provide a type of care which can help to reduce the symptoms of many inflammatory illnesses and autoimmune diseases.

Because ANCA vasculitis is a rare condition, little research exists regarding its treatment with conservative, non-pharmaceutical treatment methods such as meditation and acupuncture. Dr. Windsor provides care for patients with ANCA vasculitis who are interested in adding these healing methods to their treatment plan. Based on our positive results in the past, our primary goal for each patient is to experience a total remission of symptoms, along with improvements in quality of life.

Pharmaceutical treatments often prescribed for vasculitis include prednisone (or similar drugs, called glucocorticoids), methotrexate, cyclophosphamide, azathioprine, and rituximab (monoclonal anti-CD20 antibody). Current medical knowledge indicates that one of these pharmaceutical treatments should be started when the diagnosis of ANCA vasculitis is made. For patients taking these medications, our goal is to provide treatment in a way that will not interfere with these other medical treatments.
