Acupuncture and Natural Medicine for Gastritis

Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach, which is often associated with pain. The discomfort is often felt as a burning pain in the upper abdomen, and is frequently also associated with acid reflux. Certain foods (such as spicy and acidic foods) can cause gastritis to get worse.

In some cases, this condition may be related to a bacterial infection called H. Pylori. Other conditions which may cause or contribute to gastritis include celiac disease and eosinophil esophagitis (an allergic inflammation of the esophagus). Food sensitivities or overuse of alcohol may cause or contribute to gastritis. If gastritis is persistent for more than a week or two, our practice will recommend that the patient be seen by a gastroenterologist for evaluation.

Gastritis may be acute or chronic. Pharmaceutical options such as omeprazole (Prilosec) exist for treatment and management of gastritis, and these are generally well-tolerated by most patients. Although these treatments are effective, they generally should not be taken indefinitely due to the risk of side-effects.

Because these medications reduce the level of acid in the stomach, they may affect the ability to fully digest food. Therefore, patients taking these medications daily for long periods of time may experience a reduction in absorbtion of some food nutrients such as magnesium. If magnesium becomes very low, this can cause cardiovascular symptoms such as a rapid heart rate and skipped beats. Low magnesium can also cause muscle pain or cramps.

Side-effects of omeprazole may be mild or rarely they may be serious. The risk of serious side-effects increases if a patient has additional health conditions, or is taking the medication for months or years at a time. In some rare cases, these medications have caused pancreatitis and serious problems with the liver or kidney.

To help patients who wish to reduce the level of medications they are taking for chronic gastritis, we use gentle methods such as acupuncture and nutritional support.
