Acupuncture Treatment for Anorexia
Anorexia is a common condition involving loss of appetite or the desire to eat, which results in
malnutrition. Anorexia frequently begins in the teen years but may begin
earlier or later in life. Patients with anorexia are at risk of
complications such as osteoporosis and
depression.
Stress and depression may cause anorexia symptoms to worsen, and our
treatments can often help to reduce the adverse health effects of
stress. Many of our patients
with anorexia have experienced significant benefits from our treatments.
Acupuncture
research at Harvard Medical School and many other institutions around
the world have determined that acupuncture has profound effects on the
body's physiology. These include a wide range of molecular and cellular
effects on the immune system, nervous system, endocrine system, and
growth-regulatory systems.
As an acupuncturist and holistic health practitioner,
Dr. Windsor uses the latest
research
to find solutions for patients with anorexia. During
treatment for anorexia, it may be necessary to address another
underlying condition or reason for the occurrence of symptoms. We will
create an integrated treatment strategy for your unique concerns and
conditions. We welcome the opportunity to partner with you, and with
your other medical providers, in order to help you achieve a cure.
"In my experience, patients with anorexia can benefit from acupuncture
provided with a mind-body approach to healing. Traditional acupuncture
theory provides a therapeutic perspective for the mind-body connection.
Similar to psychotherapy, it is more effective when there is a good
quality of communication between the patient and practitioner. There is a
human element to this type of treatment. I see this as a useful
addition to other important treatments for anorexia."
