Acupuncture in the 21st Century
Acupuncture offers a valuable method of treatment for a wide range of
medical conditions. Maryland Holistics specializes in effective
acupuncture treatment for conditions as varied as depression,
osteoarthritis, herniated lumbar discs, joint or nerve injuries, panic
disorders, side-effects of medical treatments, and many inflammatory and
vascular diseases of internal body systems.
In addition to speeding recovery, acupuncture can contribute to a
relaxed sense of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Most new
patients experience some relief of their symptoms after the first visit.
Some patients experience complete relief of symptoms after one visit.
For most patients, the benefits tend to increase after a few follow-up
sessions.
Acupuncture is an art form which depends on experience, knowledge, and
sensory skill. In general, results are likely to be faster if you have
an acupuncturist who has provided more acupuncture sessions during their
career, is knowledgeable about human physiology, and has experience
treating patients with your condition.
While some people appear to receive everything they need in a single
visit, many others recognize the benefit that a longer course of
treatment can provide. The number of visits and their frequency will
depend on many factors including the reason for your visit, your
personal preferences, how quickly you benefit from treatment, and the
healing methods recommended by your practitioner to resolve your
concerns.
For treatment of certain illnesses of body systems,
Dr. Windsor
and the patient can decide together whether the goal will be to relieve
symptoms or to cure the condition. A cure may be possible in certain
conditions through acupuncture, whereas other conditions may be more
likely to respond with temporary relief.
When acupuncture is able to cure a condition of the body systems, this
is usually because of two things. First, the condition is one that
responds favorably to acupuncture (e.g. other people have also
experienced a complete and long-term resolution of symptoms). Second,
the individual patient is usually open and interested in learning more
about connections between the mind and body.
When these factors come together, acupuncture can often help us to learn
from the messages of the body or even discover a new awareness of the
healing potential of the body and mind. An individual who is healing
through this method is likely to experience a new and more harmonious
relationship with their emotions or other aspects of life. This inner
healing awareness becomes an ally in the process of recovery from the
illness, or in the prevention of recurrence.
Although this does not occur with every illness, many inflammatory
disorders can be treated successfully leading to sustained improvements
in health and enjoyment of life. After a series of treatments, the
benefits may last decades after the treatment itself, especially if the
patient has learned through the experience, and the practitioner has
supported this outcome through their treatment strategy.
Because every individual is different, Dr. Windsor will take the time to
listen carefully to your health history, as well as your current health
concerns and interests. He will then design a
treatment strategy to gently, safely, and effectively guide your body
toward well-being, and will take time to answer your questions.
Most of our new patients receive treatment on the first visit. However,
if you are not yet sure if acupuncture is right for you, you are welcome
to schedule a first visit for consultation only.
Initial appointments are usually 60-90 minutes and follow-up sessions
are usually 40-60 minutes. For most chronic conditions, a minimum of 4-6
treatments is recommended over the course of 4-8 weeks. Depending on
the specifics of your case and condition, it may be more appropriate to
have a shorter or longer course of treatment. We will re-evaluate your
progress at each session.
Dr. Windsor's scope of practice in acupuncture includes treatment of a range of conditions relating to
pain-management, mental health, and certain conditions affecting internal organs and endocrine systems.

Some patients come to us for help with chronic concerns while others
begin treatment with us for an acute concern. In around 85% of the
patients we see, benefits are observed starting within 24 hours after
the first session.
Contemporary research shows that acupuncture has the ability to release
endogenous opiates (natural pain-relievers within the body), and
recalibrate the central nervous system in a way that can help relieve
stress, anxiety, and depression.
For many conditions, acupuncture works essentially by helping your body
and mind to experience deep rest and to restore homeostatic balance.
After that, your body's natural healing abilities can take over. Some of
our patients visit us regularly, as often as weekly or every other
week, and some visit us occasionally or as needed. When we make
recommendations for care, we also recognize that each patient has a
unique perspective on health and life, and has his or her own
preferences and goals.
Your comfort and enjoyment are very important to us. Acupuncture pins
are sterile and used only once. Typically between 2 and 8 pins are used
per session. A skilled practitioner, using the highest quality
acupuncture pins, can deliver treatments which are often completely
painless.
Depending on the specifics of your situation, acupuncture may provide
significant results in as few as one or two sessions. Follow-up sessions
are often scheduled at weekly intervals, especially at the beginning of
treatment. After a month or so, Dr. Windsor may recommend a
different schedule, such as once or twice a month.
