Acupuncture for Pericarditis
Pericarditis is a condition caused by of the pericardium, a protective sac around the
heart.
The cause is not always known, but sometimes pericarditis follows a
heart attack or an illness caused by a virus or bacteria. It can also
arise as a side-effect of medications, sometimes persisting for many
months after discontinuing the medication. It may also be caused by
autoimmune disease.
Patients with pericarditis may experience sudden, sharp chest pain, with
fever and
shortness of breath. They may also experience persistent fatigue or
difficulty returning to activities they previously did without effort.
Some cases of pericarditis are mild and do not require intensive
treatment. However, moderate and severe pericarditis are treated more
intensively with anti-inflammatory medications and sometimes surgery.
Patients with pericarditis must have regular appointments with a
cardiologist. If your treatments are working, then you will begin to
feel better. If they are not working, please do not hesitate to contact
your cardiologist to ask for a sooner follow-up appointment. Because
every case is different, it may be a good idea to ask your cardiologist
how soon it will be until you start to feel better.
Our clinic provides compassionate and effective treatment within the
field of acupuncture. We have helped people with heart conditions
that involve the potential for heart failure. For most patients who are
not in the hospital or on bed rest, it is typically easy to use our services
alongside the treatments provided by a cardiologist.
For individuals with pericarditis,
Dr. Windsor
usually only provides acupuncture if the condition does not involve
fluid effusion (fluid entering the pericardium). Also, the acupuncture
needles are not placed in any close proximity to the heart or
pericardium, because the treatment approach is systemic (whole body)
rather than local.
Acupuncture
research at Harvard Medical School and many other institutions around
the world have determined that acupuncture has profound effects on the
body's physiology. These include a wide range of molecular and cellular
effects on the immune system, nervous system, endocrine system, and
growth-regulatory systems.
Essentially, acupuncture helps the body to increase its natural healing
response. During acupuncture treatment for pericarditis, between 2 and 8
hair-thin needles will be placed on very specific points on the
abdomen, arms, or legs. If you are considering acupuncture treatment for
this condition, you should see an acupuncturist with a high level of
knowledge and skill, and with many years of experience.
As an acupuncturist and holistic health practitioner, Dr. Windsor uses the latest
research to find solutions for patients with pericarditis. During treatment for pericarditis, it may be necessary to address another
underlying reason for the occurrence of symptoms. We will create an
integrated treatment strategy for your unique concerns and conditions.
We welcome the opportunity to partner with you, and with your
cardiologist and other medical providers, in order to help you maximize
the recovery of heart function.
