Acupuncture Treatment for Asthma
Asthma is a common respiratory condition in which the airway swells,
spasms, and produces extra mucus,
leading to shortness of breath. Asthma can be triggered by exercise,
cold weather, emotional stress, or allergic hypersensitivity. Some
patients with asthma have only mild symptoms, but for others the
condition is more severe. Asthma can be life-threatening if it is not
adequately treated.
Our clinic provides compassionate and effective treatment within the
field of acupuncture. We have helped many people with asthma and other
respiratory diseases. In addition to treatment of asthma, we also have
experience treating many disorders and symptoms which are related to
asthma, such as involve involuntary coughing, sinus congestion, and
emotional stress.
In some cases of severe
allergies,
the combination of sinus congestion and asthma can be life threatening.
Depending on the nature of the allergy, medications may not be enough
to help the patient. We have successfully treated adults and children
who were suffering in this way, even while taking 3 or 4 medications for
these symptoms.
In these cases, by the end of the acupuncture session, the sinuses
typically begin to drain vigorously through the nose. Although perhaps
the sight is not for the squeamish, it brings welcome relief to the
patient. Children tend to respond especially quickly to our treatments.
In general, it is very easy for patients to use our services alongside
the treatments provided by a pulmonologist.
Acupuncture
research at Harvard Medical School and many other institutions around
the world have determined that acupuncture has profound effects on the
body's physiology. These include a wide range of molecular and cellular
effects on the immune system, nervous system, endocrine system, and
growth-regulatory systems.
Essentially, acupuncture helps the body to increase its natural healing
response. It helps the body to have an easier time managing stress.
During acupuncture treatment for asthma, between 2 and 8 hair-thin
needles will be placed on very specific points on the abdomen, arms,
legs, or back. If you are considering acupuncture treatment for this
condition, it is a good idea to see an acupuncturist with a high level
of knowledge and skill, with many years of experience.
As an acupuncturist and holistic health practitioner, Dr. Windsor uses the latest
research
to find solutions for patients with asthma. During
treatment for asthma, it may be necessary to address another underlying
reason for the occurrence of symptoms. We will create an integrated
treatment strategy for your unique concerns and conditions. We welcome
the opportunity to partner with you, and with your pulmonologist and
other medical providers, in order to help you feel better as quickly as
possible.
"Asthma is a common condition which frequently affects children.
Sometimes asthma goes away as people get older, and other times it may
recur after exposure to an environmental factor. Although acupuncture is
not used to treat asthma emergencies, patients who experience asthma
typically respond well to acupuncture. This usually leads to a reduction
in symptoms which is both short-term and long-term.
The benefits of acupuncture for asthma are likely due to its ability to
help the body to regulate the inflammatory signals of the immune system,
as well as the stress response signals of the nervous system."
Dr. Eric Windsor, D.Ac.
