Natural Treatment Options for Raynaud's Syndrome
Raynaud's syndrome is a condition involving decreased circulation to the hands and sometimes the feet as
well. If you suffer from this condition, you are already aware that it
can cause fingers to become white or discolored, resulting from impaired
blood flow. The condition often seems to be related to the body's
over-reactivity to stress or cold temperature. Seventy-five percent of
Raynaud's cases occur in women between the ages of fifteen and forty.
Raynaud's can occur in the absence of other conditions or it can occur
as a result of another condition. Raynaud's symptoms have been
associated with
migraine
medications, smoking, chemotherapy, carpal tunnel syndrome, arterial
disease, chemical exposure (especially vinyl chloride), and the use of
certain hand tools in the workplace.
Simple solutions to try include wearing extra gloves in cool or cold
weather, avoiding smoking, reducing the use of air conditioning, and
using gloves to handle frozen food. Medications such as calcium channel
blockers and alpha blockers can be used to relax blood vessels and
promote normal circulation.
In addition to these strategies, several herbal and mineral options for
treatment are available. We recommend that herbs and supplements be used
in the context of an overall treatment plan designed and monitored by a
knowledgeable licensed healthcare provider. This is important in the
treatment of Raynaud's syndrome because certain supplements can act as
blood thinners or may interact with medications you may be taking.
Acupuncture
has also helped some of our patients with Raynaud's syndrome to find
relief. If you are interested in exploring these options, we invite you
to call today.
