In a 2006 study, the CDC found that excessive alcohol consumption costs the U.S. economy approximately $223.5 billion per year due to lost productivity, medical expenses, accidents, and other societal costs.1 Tragically, much of the costs associated with lost productivity are due to early mortality, and 1 in 10 deaths of working age adults (age 20-64) are due to excessive alcohol consumption.2
Women are more sensitive to the harmful effects of alcohol consumption, while men more frequently tend to drink to excess. Many individuals who experience alcohol-related health conditions actually do not meet the criteria for alcoholism or alcohol dependence. Alcohol-related illnesses can affect both men and women.
Conditions associated with alcohol include but are not limited to: liver conditions, acute and chronic pancreatitis, gastritis, kidney disease, peripheral neuropathy, alcohol-related neuropathy or limb paralysis, cancer, atrial fibrillation, and other cardiovascular concerns. Alcohol can also contribute to worsening symptoms of mental health conditions such as depression and bipolar disorder.
