Acupuncture for Behçets Disease
Behçet's disease is a rare condition which is believed to originate from a problem in the immune
system. Behçet's disease can result in rashes in mouth and genitals, as well as
kidney problems,
arthritis,
vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels), and inflammation of the
heart
and pericardium. Patients with Behçet's disease may have periods of
remission where the disease does not cause symptoms, and not all
patients have the same symptoms.
In many cases of Behçet's disease, the condition cannot be cured but it
can be managed to extend the length of times when the patient is in
remission. Stress and
depression
tend to cause Behçet's disease symptoms to worsen, and our treatments
can help to reduce the adverse health effects of stress.
Acupuncture
research at Harvard Medical School and many other institutions around
the world have determined that acupuncture has profound effects on the
body's physiology. These include a wide range of molecular and cellular
effects on the immune system, nervous system, endocrine system, and
growth-regulatory systems.
As an acupuncturist and holistic health practitioner, Dr. Windsor uses the latest
research to find solutions for patients with Behçet's disease.
During treatment for Behçet's disease, it may be necessary to address
another underlying reason for the occurrence of symptoms. We will create
an integrated treatment strategy for your unique concerns and
conditions. We welcome the opportunity to partner with you, and with
your other medical providers, in order to help you achieve a cure.
"Behcet's disease is a rare condition and I have not seen it frequently
in practice. Based on published research and my experience treating a
range of autoimmune conditions, I believe acupuncture is likely to be
helpful for individuals with this condition. To the extent that it is
helpful, this is likely due to acupuncture's ability to help the body to
regulate the inflammatory signals of the immune system, as well as the
stress response signals of the nervous system."
