Treatment Options for Idiopathic Chronic Cough
Medical providers, including pulmonary specialists, can sometimes have difficulty diagnosing the
exact cause of a chronic cough. Common causes of cough include
allergies, asthma (cough variant type), occupational exposure to air particulates
or dust, bacterial or fungal infections, acid-reflux, and post-nasal drip.
A thorough examination for chronic cough should consider all of these
conditions. Typically this examination is performed by a pulmonologist.
In some cases, the cause remains unknown. This is referred to as
idiopathic chronic cough.
How We Can Help
A recent patient visited us for chronic cough which had been present for
over 40 years. The cough was severe and frequent enough that it would
interfere with activities that most people take for granted, like being
able to laugh at a good joke (without coughing).
During these 40 years, the cause remained unknown and although she had
seen many medical providers over these years, she was not able to find
any treatment that worked. Within 2 or 3 sessions at our clinic, the
cough had disappeared. As the weather turned colder in winter, the cough
returned in a milder form. We were able to continue treatment at a
reduced frequency in order to provide relief.
The majority of our patients choose to receive
acupuncture
treatment when visiting our clinic because we offer a high level of
care and skill within this practice specialty. A talented acupuncturist
can effectively treat many health concerns from a holistic perspective
of body, mind, and spirit.
