Acupuncture for Cognitive Disorders

Many physical health conditions can affect cognitive functioning. These conditions include Alzheimer's disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, Lyme disease, and many more. Cognitive disorders can affect people of all ages, but older adults are more often affected. Motor vehicle accidents are a common cause of brain injury in younger people.

Family support is extremely valuable for patients, but not all patients have strong and local family support. For patients and their families, it sometimes may seem like the biggest challenge to getting well is navigating the health care system. Sometimes it can feel like being in a stormy sea.

We understand how difficult it sometimes can be to navigate the medical system (even for people with normal cognitive function). That is why we take extra time to support our patients with cognitive disorders to find help along the way. We can support you to find the right specialists, ask them the right questions, and integrate all aspects of your care.

Acupuncture is a medical treatment which may be helpful for some cognitive disorders. For example, acupuncture has been shown to help patients to regain more cognitive functioning after a stroke. It has also been shown to slow degenerative neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease. It is not yet known whether acupuncture helps with Alzheimer's disease.

Acupuncture research at Harvard Medical School and many other institutions around the world have determined that acupuncture has profound effects on the body's physiology. These include a wide range of molecular and cellular effects on the immune system, nervous system, endocrine system, and growth-regulatory systems.

As an acupuncturist and holistic health practitioner, Dr. Windsor uses the latest research and technology to find solutions for patients with neurological diseases. We would welcome the opportunity to partner with you, and with your other medical providers, in order to help you achieve a the best outcome possible.

Some of our elderly patients have said that they wished someone had prepared them a little better for the challenges of getting older. Some have said they did not know that getting older meant that they would experience new health conditions and symptoms more frequently, including cognitive symptoms. Or, for example, that the pain of neuropathy would affect their life so badly.

On the other hand, we also hear some of our older patients saying that they have never enjoyed life more than they do now. That their most recent high school reunion was so much better than the last one. They are feeling young inside, and feeling well enough to enjoy life. They have a vibrant and healthy social life. That is the sort of experience we want to see for all of our patients.

For many patients with cognitive symptoms, being able to work is a major concern. If the cause of cognitive symptoms is a motor vehicle accident, the patient may be suffering from back pain or other types of pain. Many cognitive disorders are frequently accompanied by depression. Dr. Windsor provides care for all of these concerns.

The path of healing from a cognitive disorder is not easy, but it is easier when you have a strong network of people you can trust to have your best interests at heart. We would be honored and privileged to be a part of that network for you or your loved one.
