Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition which causes symptoms in the lungs as well as other tissues of the body. Modern medical science continues
to advance in its ability to treat this chronic health condition. It is
caused by an alteration in the body's ability to process electrolytes
through a type of cellular component called an ion channel.
Altered electrolyte transport within ion channels (of the exocrine glands) leads to changes in the body's production of mucus within the respiratory, digestive and reproductive tracts. This leads to blockage of mucosal ducts which can cause infections to occur. These infections lead to inflammation, which is the precursor to fibrosis. Fibrosis is a pathological change in the tissue of an organ which causes the organ to function less efficiently.
