Acupuncture and Natural Medicine for Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition which causes symptoms in the
lungs as well as other tissues of the body. Modern medical science continues
to advance in its ability to treat this chronic health condition. It is
caused by an alteration in the body's ability to process electrolytes
through a type of cellular component called an ion channel.
Altered electrolyte transport within ion channels (of the exocrine
glands) leads to changes in the body's production of mucus within the
respiratory, digestive and reproductive tracts. This leads to blockage
of mucosal ducts which can cause infections to occur. These infections
lead to inflammation, which is the precursor to fibrosis. Fibrosis is a
pathological change in the tissue of an organ which causes the organ to
function less efficiently.
How We Can Help
Our clinic provides a high quality of care within the specialty of
acupuncture
and natural medicine. Treatments that we provide can help to reduce the
inflammation which is related to the development of fibrosis in CF
patients.
Our patients with cystic fibrosis have reported experiencing fewer
infections and hospitalizations when using our service on a schedule of
weekly or every other week.
Successful treatment of CF is any
treatment that helps to slow the progression of disease. Our treatments
have offered benefits to patients with CF complicated by lung infection,
liver cirrhosis, and portal hypertension, as well as other conditions affecting
multiple organs or systems.
"In my experience, individuals with cystic fibrosis appear to respond
well to regular acupuncture treatment on a regular schedule. Most of my
experience treating this condition is with adults in the age range of
20-30. Although available data are limited, my best information
currently suggests that the likelihood of hospitalization is reduced in
individuals receiving this type of treatment."
