Acupuncture for Kienböck's Disease

Kienböck's disease is caused when the blood supply to one of the wrist bones, the lunate bone, is impaired. As the condition progresses, patients may experience inflammation and pain in the wrist and hand. In advanced cases of Kienböck's disease, it is possible that there may be a loss of functional bone tissue in the lunate bone.

This condition tends to affect young men between the ages of 20 and 40. Sometimes both wrists are affected. Surgical treatment is sometimes attempted, but surgery does not always lead to an improvement in symptoms. Pain medications may be helpful, but they can often have side-effects which include kidney damage.

Oral corticosteroids are also sometimes prescribed, but they also produce undesirable effects including weight gain, increased pressure in the eyes, raised blood pressure, fluid retention and other symptoms. Taken over a long period of time, corticosteroids can also raise your blood sugar level and increase your risk of infections and osteoporosis (brittle bones). Moreover, these pharmaceuticals do not address the underlying cause of inflammation.

Acupuncture research at Harvard Medical School and many other institutions around the world have determined that acupuncture has profound effects on the body's physiology. These include a wide range of molecular and cellular effects on the immune system, nervous system, endocrine system, and growth-regulatory systems.

As an acupuncturist and holistic health practitioner, Dr. Windsor uses the latest research to find solutions for patients with Kienböck's disease. During treatment for Kienböck's disease, it may sometimes be necessary to address another underlying condition or reason for the occurrence of symptoms.

We will create an integrated treatment strategy for your unique concerns and conditions. We welcome the opportunity to partner with you, and with your other medical providers, in order to help you achieve a the best outcome possible.

Left untreated Kienböck's disease can get progressively worse, resulting in a chronic tingling, burning or numb sensation, or intense pain between your hand and arm, a loss of grip strength and sometimes a loss of feeling in your hand. So it's important to seek treatment early in order to reduce the likelihood of more serious damage to the lunate bone.

When performed by a skilled and experienced practitioner, acupuncture can reduce the pain and swelling associated with Kienböck's disease and help to restore normal feeling and range of motion with virtually no harmful side effects.
