Acupuncture Treatment for Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a common condition which often affects people over the age of 40, but can
sometimes affect younger people as well. Symptoms commonly associated
with osteoarthritis include pain in the knees, back, neck, ankles,
hands, or other joints.
Osteoarthritis is different from other types of arthritis, such as
rheumatoid arthritis
or reactive arthritis. During the early stage of osteoarthritis, the
pain is usually felt on just one side of the body, rather than on both
sides. Generally, osteoarthritis arises from repetitive use of a joint
which leads to damage to the cartilage within the joint. A previous
injury may make it more likely for a person to develop osteoarthritis.
Maryland Holistics provides acupuncture which
can help to reduce the symptoms of osteoarthritis of the back, knees,
hands, and other joints.
Acupuncture
has been shown to be an effective treatment for the symptoms of
arthritis. Some of this medical research evidence was provided by a
randomized clinical trial of acupuncture involving 713 patients with
osteoarthritis of the hip or knee.
1 In this study, patients
receiving acupuncture had up to 15 sessions of acupuncture in a 3-month
period. During this study, all patients also continued their usual care
in addition to acupuncture.
Osteoarthritis severity scores and quality of life measures were
significantly improved in the group receiving acupuncture relative to
the control group which did not receive acupuncture (n=713, p=.001).
1
Improvements in the patients receiving acupuncture were maintained at 3
and 6 months. Osteoarthritis severity was assessed using the Western
Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis index (WOMAC scale),
and quality of life was assessed by the SF36 scale.

"Depending on the severity, osteoarthritis may resolve very quickly with
acupuncture or it may require a longer approach. In my experience, a
minor flare-up of osteoarthritis can usually be treated very quickly.
These osteoarthritis flare-ups may be more likely if a joint was injured
in the past. Longer treatment plans are often useful for patients who
have more chronic osteoarthritis, or if there are other factors
contributing to the pain."
