Treatment Options for Pulmonary Fibrosis

Pulmonary fibrosis is a condition of the lungs which can cause significant problems with breathing. In cases where the cause is unknown, the condition is called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

This condition may arise from exposure to smoke, exposure to dust contaminated with bacteria or fungi, or as a side-effect of some pharmaceuticals including amiodarone, bleomycin, and methotrexate. It is believed that certain genetic and autoimmune conditions may play a role in the development of pulmonary fibrosis.

How We Can Help

Modern medicine has not yet developed a cure for this condition. However, there are options which can slow the progression of this illness. If the cause of the illness is removed or reduced, patients may experience an improvement in symptoms. This condition is difficult to treat and many general practitioners may not be sufficiently familiar with it to achieve results.

Our strategies for treatment of this condition focus on reduction of a cellular signalling molecule called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) through acupuncture. A similar biochemical approach for treatment of pulmonary fibrosis is also utilized by the pharmaceutical treatment called Ofev (nintedanib). It seems likely that patients may respond better to a combination of acupuncture and pharmaceutical treatment than to either treatment alone.
