Depression is a very common health concern, affecting millions of people in the United States every year. In the U.S., around 17% of people experience an episode of depression during their lifetime. According to some recent reports, around 80% of people with depression do not receive any treatment. Untreated depression can increase the risk and complications of other illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes, asthma, and arthritis.

Our practice offers compassionate support for your well-being from a holistic perspective. We provide acupuncture and other natural solutions to help you feel well again -- in body, mind, and spirit. The solutions we provide are 100% free of pharmaceuticals and achieve results with almost zero side effects.

While its normal for everyone to have occasional times of sadness or feeling down, it is important to seek treatment if depression symptoms continue for more than two weeks. Early treatment offers a better chance for a faster recovery. Sometimes the symptoms of depression can go unnoticed and undiagnosed. According to the CDC, symptoms of depression may include:

• Persistent sad, anxious, or empty mood

• Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism

• Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness

• Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities, including sex

• Fatigue and decreased energy

• Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, making decisions

• Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping

• Low appetite and weight loss or overeating and weight gain

• Thoughts of death or suicide, suicide attempts

• Restlessness, irritability

• Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and pain for which no other cause can be diagnosed

Most people experience an improvement in symptoms with treatment. However, depression can often make people feel as though things will never get better. If you are experiencing depression, try not to let negative emotions stop you from seeking medical help. With treatment, most people do begin to feel better within a few weeks or months. If your treatment is not effective, then it is time to re-evaluate your treatment strategy and perhaps add some additional support.

Sometimes depression is triggered by a life-event, such as the loss of a relationship, or another issue affecting one's job, business, or family. Sometimes chronic stress or lack of sleep can be a trigger. There have been case reports of some medications (such as cortisone injections) triggering depression in some people. Other times, there may be no known cause.

For people suffering from depression, it is important to eat nutritious food and get regular sleep and exercise. Sometimes medications are required to treat depression. If you are taking medications, our treatments can be used in coordination with your medications.

Medications used to treat depression can sometimes have side effects, such as:

• nausea

• weight gain

• loss of sexual desire or other sexual problems, such as erectile dysfunction and decreased orgasm

• weight gain

• fatigue and drowsiness

• insomnia

• dry mouth

• blurred vision

• constipation

• dizziness

• agitation

• irritability

• anxiety

Often our clinic sees new patients who have been on medications for depression, and would like to stop taking these medications. We are able to help in almost all of these cases. We recommend that any changes to your medications be made in coordination with the physician who prescribed the medication. Generally, these medications must be reduced slowly over several weeks or months.
