Metabolic syndrome refers to a pattern of biochemical changes related to abdominal weight gain, insulin resistance, and lipid metabolism. This syndrome is also sometimes called prediabetes because in some individuals it may later lead to the development of type II diabetes. Unfortunately, this condition is becoming increasingly common due to the typical modern diet composed of foods which are high in simple carbohydrates and fats.

Glucose metabolism and energy storage are central factors in the functioning of all body tissues and organs. When sugar and simple carbohydrates are consumed, the body releases insulin. When large amounts of sugars and carbohydrates are consumed, a healthy pancreas will secrete larger amounts of insulin. In response to high levels of insulin, the body will produce more fat (adipose) cells and store any excess energy from sugars as fat.

Metabolic syndrome develops over a period of years as insulin levels rise excessively and frequently. High levels of insulin cause cells of the liver and muscle tissue to make changes in their internal biochemistry. They become less sensitive to insulin and require higher levels of insulin in order to process glucose. Metabolic syndrome increases the risk of some liver conditions and cardiovascular conditions.

Adipose (fat) tissue contributes to a low level of chronic inflammation in the body, which may cause metabolic syndrome to stay the same or worsen over time. In some cases this leads to the onset of type II diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is a complex condition requiring a multi-dimensional approach to treatment. Attention to nutrition and exercise is very important.

How We Can Help

Our treatment approach focuses on reduction of inflammation and oxidative stress within the body. To achieve these effects, we provide acupuncture and nutritional coaching. Acupuncture is well-known for pain-relief, but can also be helpful for reducing inflammation in many chronic conditions such as metabolic syndrome. When these therapeutic approaches are combined with exercise appropriate for an individual's fitness level, metabolic syndrome will begin to reverse and the body's healthy physiology can be restored.
